CHARLOTTE, NC (March 14, 2023) – The Claflin Lady Panthers are off to another great start to the softball season and the honors are rolling in as three members of the softball team earned weekly honors from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). After leading the team to a 4-2 record, Claflin senior Brenay Howard and the freshman duo of Cydney Cooper and Zecariya Fenwick all took home accolades when the conference announced its weekly softball honorees.
Howard was named the CIAA Food Lion Offensive Player of the Week after great week with the Lady Panthers. She started in all six games for the team and she was dynamic at the plate. She finished the week with nine runs scored and seven runs batted in (RBI). She finished the week batting .400 with eight hits in 20 at-bats. Her best game of the week came at Paine College where she went three-for-four with two runs scored against USC Aiken.
Fenwick was named the CIAA Food Lion Rookie of the Week after continuing her great start to her career. She started in all six games and she finished the week with seven runs scored and six RBI. For the week, she batted .476 with two doubles and two triples.
Cooper was named the CIAA Food Lion Defensive Player of the Week for her great play on defense. She played in all six games with five starts. Playing between second base and short stop, she played some great defense for the team. She finished the week with 14 putouts with seven assists and no fielding errors. She was also a part of a double play.
