NORFOLK, Va., (November 17 2023) –South Carolina State freshman guard Mitchel Taylor was named MEAC Rookie of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola the league announced.

Taylor (G, 170, 6-3, Fr., Atlanta, Ga.) averaged 13.3 points, 3.3 assists, and 3.3 rebounds to help the Bulldogs start the season with a 2-1 record. He recorded 17 points, knocking down 7-of-8 shots (86%), including three rebounds, three steals, and two assists in an 87-77 victory over North Florida. Taylor shot 53.3 percent for the week, hitting 16-of-30 from the field and 7-of-11 from the free-throw line.

Others earning honors were Howard guard Bryce Harris was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, while North Carolina Central’s senior forward Emmanuel Izunabor earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively.

Harris (G, 6-4, 220, Brentwood, NY) averaged 18.3 points, shooting 59 percent from the field, with 5.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in three games last week for the Bison. He posted a team-high 23 points, hitting 7-of-7 from the charity stripe, five rebounds, and three steals in a win over Hampton. He also posted 17 points and eight rebounds against Georgia Tech.

Izunabor (F, 225, 6-8, r-Sr., Fayetteville, N.C.) averaged 6.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.3 blocks, and 7.67 points in three games for the Eagles. He recorded 12 points, with eight rebounds and two blocks against Georgia. For the week, Izunabor’s defensive effort led to 20 rebounds, four assists, and four blocks.

Other Top Performers Camaren Sparrow (Coppin State) tallied 19 points and eight rebounds in three games for the Eagles.

Chris Fields, Jr. (Norfolk State) totaled 18 points, seven rebounds, one assist, and six steals to aid the Spartans to a 3-0 finish last week.

Jaylani Darden (Norfolk State) registered 36 points, averaging 12.0 points and 7.7 rebounds in three games for the Spartans.

Malik Battle (Coppin State) shot perfectly (10-10) from the free-throw line en route to 16 points against Mt. Saint Mary’s (Md.).

Po’Boigh King (North Carolina Central) recorded a season-high 26 points in a win over Virginia-Lynchburg.

Omar Croskey (South Carolina State) scored 21 points, with six steals and three assists in a win over North Florida.

Kamron Hobbs (Morgan State) had 21 points, five assists, and three steals to lead the Bears to a 78-60 win over Penn State Wilkes Barre.

Jamaril Thomas (Norfolk State) amassed 20 points, with seven rebounds, four steals, four assists, and one block against Penn State-Wilkes Barre.
