NORFOLK, Va., Dec. 13, 2022—Coppin State redshirt junior guard Mossi Staples and South Carolina State sophomore guard Lovely Sonnier were selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. Morgan State graduate forward Charlene Shepherd named Defensive Player of the Week.
Staples (5-7, r-Jr., G, Fort Washington, Md.) averaged 23.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in two games for the Eagles this past week, shooting a combined 14-for-38 (.370) from the floor and 7-for-18 (.390) from 3-point range. She dropped a career-high 26 points in a win at Saint Francis (Pa.), hitting four 3-pointers and 10 of her 14 free throws, while also grabbing three steals. Against Syracuse, she scored 21 points and dished out five assists.
Sonnier (6-0, So., G, San Francisco, Calif.) was key in South Carolina State’s first win of the season – a 64-53 defeat of UNC Greensboro on Monday. She went 7-for-14 from the floor and 6-for-10 from the free throw line, dropping 20 points to go along with 16 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. She also grabbed six steals, dished out four assists and blocked three shots.
Shepherd (6-2, Gr., F, Killeen, Texas) grabbed 11 rebounds – 10 on the defensive end – and picked up two steals in the Bears’ contest at Texas State. She also scored 17 points on the offensive end to record her third double-double of the season and second in a row.

Jalynda Salley (Coppin State) blocked two shots against Saint Francis (Pa.) after turning in a 10-rebound, 1-block effort at Syracuse.
Kaniyah Harris (Howard) grabbed three steals at DePaul.
Destiny Howell (Howard) dropped 22 points and hit four 3-pointers at DePaul.
Iyanna Warren (Howard) scored 18 points on 7-for-14 shooting against Towson.
Kira Lowery (North Carolina Central) dropped 22 points on nine field goals at Memphis to go along with three assists and two steals.
