ORANGEBURG, SC (March 28, 2022) – South Carolina State sophomore sprinter Waddell Rembert-Jett won the 100 meters against a strong field at the Weems Baskins Relays at the University of South Carolina Saturday (Mar. 26 with a time of 10.39, a personal record (PR) and the top mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) this season.
Overall, Coach Jerod Wims‘ teams combined for eleven (11) Top 10 showings and set nine personal records at the meet.
Rembert-Jett also helped the Bulldogs to a first-place finish among collegiate teams in the 4×400-meter relay (Devin Brewington, Jaden Barker, Rembert-Jett and Tyler Jeffers) with a clocking of 3:14.08, and a fifth-place showing in the 4×100-meter relay (Rembert-Jett, Jalon Kimbrough, Brewington and Tyler Jeffers) in a time of 40.84.
Other top performers for SCSU included Brewington, fourth in the 200 meters with the top time (21.12) in the conference; SCSU Jada Banks, seventh in the women’s 1500 meters with a time of 4:48.40, second-best in the MEAC; Angelica Frederick, seventh in the 400 meters (58.44), a PR; Debrielle Williams, seventh in the 800 meters (2:22.37); Ashanti Meyers, eighth in the 3000 meters (11:35.36); Erick Hill, ninth in the long jump invite (6.66 meters); Trey Felton, tenth in the men’s 3000 meters (9:27.38); and Thomas Kailem, tenth in the 400-meter hurdles (55.37), a PR and fourth-best in the MEAC.
Wims lauded the effort of his teams, but said he expects the groups to do even better as the season continues.
“Though we performed well in certain areas and got great marks on the NCAA list, we still have work to do,” said Wims. “The group is young and they have great talent, but they still have a lot to learn. Through the tough conditions, I believe the effort was decent… but in some areas we lacked good execution, and that’s where our focus will be over the next few weeks. Expect something big from our next outing,” which is scheduled for Apr. 16 at the Gamecock Invitational at USC.
