ORANGEBURG, SC (August 29, 2023) —- South Carolina State Acting Director of Athletics Keshia Campbell will be among a group of HBCU women administrators from around the country highlighted during special ceremonial coin tosses before selected matches at the US Open Tennis Tournament at Flushing Meadows, NY Wednesday, August 30th.
During the ceremonies, which will be sponsored by HBCU Live, Campbell will join the other HBCU female athletics directors at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Campbell’s participation in the coin tosses will occur prior to Match Two (2) during Arthur Ashe Stadium Day.
Other HBCU administrators chosen to participate are Melody Webb (Norfolk State), Dena Freeman-Patton (Morgan State), Tiffani-Dawn Sykes (Florida A&M), Alecia Shields-Gadson (Delaware State) and Tara A. Owens (Maryland Eastern Shore)
Campbell, entering her second season as acting director of athletics, is only the second female athletics director in the 127-history of SC State. In addition, she is a part of the university’s storied history in athletics as she is a member of the SCSU Athletics Hall of Fame.
The Blenheim, SC native was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Basketball Player of the Year during her playing days for the Lady Bulldogs and was also named MEAC Coach of the Year (2001) during a seven-year coaching stint at her alma mater. She was later named to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference’s (MEAC) 50th Anniversary All-Time Basketball Team.
Prior to taking the reins as acting athletics director at SCSU, Campbell served in various administrative positions around the country, including senior associate commissioner at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), director of business affairs and lean coordinator at the University of Texas at Dallas, assistant to the associate director of championships at the NCAA (2006-2009), assistant athletics director at Hampton University, where she was later promoted to associate director of athletics for the Pirates (2004-2006).
