DeShawnte Carraway vs. Voorhees

DENMARK, SC – The Claflin Panthers (0-22) had a solid effort at the plate, but some late runs proved costly in a 9-3 road loss to the Voorhees Tigers. The Panthers totaled six hits in the game, including a pair of doubles, but the team was not able to get the runs they needed across the plate in a 9-3 loss to the Voorhees Tigers.

There was no shortage of effort from the Tigers. Senior catcher DeShawnte Carraway led the way for the team with a two-for-three batting effort with a run scored and two runs batted in (RBI). Junior outfielder Duane Henderson, Jr. added a one-for-four batting performance with a double and a run scored.

The Panthers kept the game close for most of their time on the diamond. After allowing an opening-inning run to the Tigers, but the team answered in the third inning when Carraway hit an RBI single that scored senior third base JaJuan Curry. The Panthers allowed a pair of fourth-inning runs to the Tigers before scoring a pair of sixth inning runs. Carraway struck again with an RBI double that scored Henderson, Jr. before junior Corey Brown hit an RBI sacrifice fly that scored Caraway  tie the game 3-3. Unfortunately, the team allowed six unanswered runs in the final three innings of play to take the 9-3 loss.

Claflin junior Roman Woods-Golston (0-1) started the game and was the pitcher of record. He went 5.2 innings and he finished the game with two strikeouts. Senior Jaden Hardin came in for 0.2 innings and added a strikeout. Trevonte Green came in for 1.2  innings and he recorded a pair of strikeouts.

With the loss, the Panthers fall to 0-22 overall. The team will return to action for Peach Belt Conference play when they head to Greenwood, South Carolina to take on the Lander Bearcats.
