BALTIMORE, MD (February 29, 2024) – The Claflin Panthers (17-10) got out to a hot start and held off a tough Virginia State Trojans (15-15) team for a 75-69 win in the quarterfinal round of the 2024 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament. After taking an early lead, the Panthers fended off a hard-charging Virginia State team to make their first trip to the semifinal round of the CIAA Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament since 2020.

The game was a hard-fought one with neither team giving anything away easily. As a team, the Panthers played some tough defense, holding the Trojans to just 69 points, despite shooting 50.0% (24-of48) from the floor. The Panthers had an equally tough time, shooting just 42.9% (21-of-49) from the field, but the team was able to make the shots that they needed in the win. While he was the only Panther to reach double-digit scoring in the game, the team had five other players with at least eight points. Claflin junior forward John Whitehead, III led the Panthers’ rebounding effort with seven rebounds in the game.
