SAVANNAH, GA (March 6, 2022) – The Claflin University men’s track & field team got the outdoor season started in a big way when the team headed to Savannah, Georgia for the Savannah State Tiger Relays, Saturday. With some great efforts in both sprint and field events, the Panthers really made a name for themselves at the meet.
Several of the Panthers’ top performances came on the track. Sophomore Chandar Anderson set the tone for the team with a second place showing in the men’s 400m dash. He ran a 50.03 to lead all sprinters in the event. Freshman Darius Holmes also had a strong day when he finished second in the men’s 400m hurdles with a 58.09. Holmes also placed sixth in the men’s 110 hurdles with a 16.24. The Panthers’ 4x400m relay also had a great day when they placed second in the event with a 3:22.25.
The Panthers’ field events also had a strong day as well. Junior Michael Miller had a terrific performance when he placed sixth in the men’s discus throw with a 105’8″ (32.20m) throw. Miller followed up the effort with a seventh-place finish in the men’s shot put with a 38’6″ (1.73m) throw. Fellow junior Jamario James placed eighth with a 104’10” (31.85m) throw. Senior Matthew Rox placed eighth in the men’s javelin throw with a 135’8″ (41.35m) throw.
The Panthers will get a bit of a break before returning to action. The team will return to action on March 25th when the team takes part in the Weems Baskin hosted by the University of South Carolina.
