WINSTON-SALEM, NC (February 12, 2023) – The Claflin Panthers got a great start to the 2023 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships, Sunday. When the dust settled on day one, it was the Panthers who led the way with 33 points to lead the men’s championship while the Lady Panthers are currently in seventh place after day one.
The Panthers jumped ahead on day one with some dominating efforts in the middle distance events. Freshman Reginald Gore set the tone when he took first place in the men’s mile run, He ran a 4:35.79 to earn his spot atop the podium. The Panthers weren’t done as the team also won the men’s distance medley. The squad ran an 11:02.78 to claim the top spot in the event. In field events, Claflin sophomore Jocolbi Morgan also placed third in the men’s long jump with a 7.12m jump.
In addition to the finals results, the Panthers also have several qualifiers for event finals tomorrow. Gore qualified for the men’s 800m run when he ran a 2:02.05 to place second in the qualifying round of the event. Junior sprinter Chandar Anderson qualified for the finals of the men’s 400m dash. Sophomore Darius Holmes qualified for the finals of the men’s 60m hurdles while freshman Jonathan Flemister has also qualified for the finals of both the men’s 60m dash and the men’s 200m dash.
In the women’s events, sophomore sprinter Zoe Adams had the top day for the Lady Panthers as she qualified for the finals of the women’s 200m dash and the women’s 400m dash. The Lady Panthers placed sixth in the women’s distance relay with a 14:29.43.
The Lady Panthers and Panthers will return to action, tomorrow to complete the 2023 CIAA Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships.
