COLUMBIA, SC (January 20, 2024) – The Claflin University men’s and women’s track & field teams returned to the track with some great efforts this weekend at the Carolina Challenge hosted by the University of South Carolina. Both the Panthers and Lady Panthers had some great individual efforts at the two-day meet.
It was on the track where the Lady Panthers really made their mark. Sophomore Malika Coutain set the stage with a seventh-place finish in the women’s 400m dash where she ran a 1:02.16. Senior Madison McDonald added a 10th place finish in the women’s 1-mile run with a 5:53.68. In the field events, Lady Panthers freshman Marlayna McBride placed fifth with a 4’9.5″ (1.46m) height in the women’s high jump.
The Panthers also had a great showing. Junior sprinter Zion Murry placed second in the men’s 400m dash when he ran an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time of 48.45. Claflin sophomore Jonathan Flemister added a fourth-place finish in the men’s 200m dash invite. He recorded a 21.88 to earn the finish. He also placed second in the men’s 300m dash with a 34.30. The Panthers’ 4x400m relay team also ran another NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time with a 3:13.50. In field events, junior Jocolbi Morgan placed second in the men’s triple jump with a 46’6.75″ (14.19m) jump as well.
The Claflin men’s and women’s track & field teams will return to action this weekend when the teams take part in the Camel City Invitational.
