Panthers Earn a Second-Seed Heading into 2023-24 CIAA Men's Basketball Championship Tournament

CHARLOTTE, NC (February 26, 2024) – The Claflin Panthers completed their second straight successful season. For their efforts, the team earned a second-place divisional seed in the 2024 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament. With the seeding, the Panthers are in prime position to pursue the conference championship.

The team earned the second seed after a dynamic 2023-24 regular season. Claflin finished the season with a 16-9 overall record and a 13-5 record in CIAA play. With an 8-4 record in CIAA Southern Division play, the Panthers tied the first place Fayetteville State Broncos, but the point-differential gave the division title and the first place seed to the Broncos. Last season, the Panthers turned in their first winning season since joining the CIAA and the team repeated the feat with a great effort this season. Prior to the 2021-22 season, the Panthers hadn’t had a winning record since the 2017-18 season.

As the second seed, the Panthers automatically move into the quarterfinal round of the tournament and will take on the winner of the Virginia State/Johnson C. Smith quarterfinal round game on Wednesday. With the second-place seeding, the Panthers make their third straight trip to the quarterfinal round of the tournament. In 2020, the Panthers upset the top-seeded Virginia State Trojans before a semifinal loss to eventual champion Winston-Salem State in the 2020 CIAA Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament. Last season, the Panthers took a quarterfinal round loss to the Winston-Salem State Rams.
