STATESBORO, GA (May 1, 2022) – The Claflin Lady Panthers continue to get better each week with some terrific performances at the Georgia State Spring Classic, Saturday. While the field events stole the show, the team also had some great efforts on the track in their last meet before the conference championship meet next weekend.
It was in the field events where the Lady Panthers really shone with the throwers leading the way. Senior Zaria Nelson set the tone when she recorded a 154’2″ (47.00m) throw in the women’s discus throw. The distance was enough for a provisional qualifying mark in the 2022 NCAA Division II Women’s Outdoor Track & Field National Championships. It also improved her hold as the top thrower in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). She is currently ranked third in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region. She also had a great day in the shot put where she finished second with a 40′ 1.25″ (12.22m) throw. Senior Kiara Belton also placed third in the women’s long jump where she recorded a 15′ 3.25″ (4.65m) jump.
On the track, the Lady Panthers also had a strong day. Sophomore Justice Bell won the women’s 100m hurdles with a 17.04 while freshman Zoe Adams continued her terrific season with a second place finish in the women’s 400m dash. She recorded a 56.87 at the meet.
With the meet done, the Lady Panthers will turn all of their attention to conference competition as the team prepares to take part in the 2022 CIAA Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship Meet next weekend.
