ORANGEBURG, SC (April 29, 2023) – The Claflin Lady Panthers (25-10, 11-2 CIAA) got back to their winning ways with a 5-0 win over the Fayetteville State Broncos (15-17, 10-5 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. The win is the 11th in the last 12 games for the team.
The Lady Panthers had to work hard for every run that they scored, and the team delivered. As a team, the Lady Panthers totaled five hits in the game while benefitting from three Fayetteville State fielding errors. Claflin senior Kennedy Baskerville led the way when she went two-for-two with two runs scored. Freshman short stop Cydney Cooper added a pair of runs batted in (RBI).
It was a big fourth inning that powered the Lady Panthers’ win. A Broncos fielding error allowed freshman catcher Zakariya Fenwick to score the first run while a Cooper two-RBI single added two more runs before another FSU error allowed freshman designated hitter Kourtney White to score and gave the Lady Panthers a 4-0 lead. The team added another score when sophomore outfielder Aniya Jones hit an RBI sacrifice fly that allowed sophomore Kennedy Baskerville to score and gave the Lady Panthers a 5-0 lead.
With the lead in hand, the Lady Panthers continued some terrific defense to claim the win. Claflin senior Jaelyn Jackson (16-5) took the pitching win when she started the game and threw all seven innings. She finished the game with no runs allowed on one hit. She recorded 10 strikeouts in the win.
With the win, the Lady Panthers improve to 25-10 overall and 11-2 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The two teams would go on to complete the doubleheader later in the day.
