BOWIE, MD (May 7, 2022) – The Claflin University men’s and women’s track & field teams completed a solid weekend at the 2022 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Outdoor Track & Field Championship Meet. The Lady Panthers finished the meet in fourth place with 59 total points while the Panthers finished the meet in sixth place with a total of 44 points at the meet.
The Lady Panthers had their usual strong performances both on the track and in field events. As she has done all season long, freshman Zoe Adams set the tone with a great performance. She won the women’s 400m dash with a 57.46 in the event and she followed the effort with a fourth-place finish in the women’s 200m dash. She recorded a 25.71 in the event. Sophomore Jonnica Fuller placed fifth in the women’s 400m dash with a 59.98. Freshman Madison McDonald also had a great day as she placed third in the women’s 3000m run with an 11:35.60 in the event. She also placed seventh in the women’s 1500m run. She turned in a seventh place finish with a 5:19.49.
In field events, it was senior Zaria Nelson who led the way for the Lady Panthers. She won the women’s shot put with a 43’11.75″ (13.40m) throw before she claimed second place in the women’s discus throw where she recorded a 135’10” (41.40m) throw.
The Panthers had some challenges on the day, but in the end, the team finished with some strong performances of their own. On the track, the team saw youth movement with sophomore Chandar Anderson kicking things off with a third place finish in the men’s 400m dash. He finished the event in 49.92. Fellow sophomore Zion Murry added a second place finish in the men’s 800m run in 1:56.82. Freshman Quandarius Patrick added a fourth place finish in the men’s 110m hurdles. He recorded a 17.02 in the event. Junior Caleb Patterson added a fifth place finish in the men’s 5000m. He completed the event in 18:04.81.
In field events, the Panthers got a few solid performances at the meet. Freshman Jocolbi Morgan set the tone with a third place finish in the men’s long jump. He recorded a 22′ 6.5″ (6.87m) distance. Senior Matthew Rox added a second place finish in the men’s javelin throw. He recorded a 141′ 2″ (43.02m) in the event.
Though direct conference competition is over for the Lady Panthers and Panthers, the teams will look to send some of their student-athletes to the 2022 NCAA Division II National Championship Meet.
