Lady Panthers Place 11th at 2023 CIAA Women's Cross Country Championship

 

SALEM, VA (October 26, 2023) – The Claflin University men’s and women’s cross-country teams put on their best efforts at the 2023 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men’s and Women’s Cross-Country Championship Meet, Thursday afternoon. When the dust settled, the Lady Panthers finished 11th at the meet while the Panthers earned a seventh-placed finish.

The Lady Panthers earned their 11th place finish after totaling 277 points in the women’s 5K run. Claflin junior Madison McDonald earned a 32nd place finish in the women’s 5K run with a 22:33.7. Freshman Layla Spencer added a 54th place finish when she recorded a 25:38.9. Sophomore Pheijana Burnside placed 55th with a 25:39.8 while senior Shekinah Duffin placed 66th with a 28:13.6.

The Panthers earned their seventh-place finish with 151 total points in the men’s 8K run. Claflin sophomore Jakarriez Sanders led the way with a 21st place finish in 29:58.3. Senior Caleb Patterson added a 28th-place finish with a 29:58.3. Junior Zion Murry was close behind, placing 29th with a 31:14.2. Sophomore Reginald Gore rounded the scoring for the Panthers with a 31:35.2.

The efforts close out the cross-country season for the Lady Panthers and the Panthers. From here, team members will turn their attentions to the upcoming indoor and outdoor track & field seasons.
