Lady Panthers, Panthers Continue Strong Showings at Carolina Challenge

COLUMBIA, SC (January 21, 2023 ) – The Claflin University men’s and women’s indoor track & field teams continued their strong start to the season with some great showings at the Carolina Challenge. On both the men’s and women’s teams, the Claflin Lady Panthers and Panthers posted some of the top times in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).

For the Lady Panthers, the team saw some great efforts by their most consistent performers along with a couple of newcomers who also stepped up. Sophomore Zoe Adams continued to be the top long sprinter in the CIAA. She ran a 57.04, currently the top time in the CIAA, in the women’s 400m dash to place fourth in the event. Freshman Phejana Burnside also had a great day when she ran a 9.64 in the women’s 60m hurdles. The time is the 10th best in the CIAA.

On the men’s side of things, it was the Panthers’ middle distance runners who stood out at the meet. The freshman duo of Reginald Gore and Jakarriez Sanders both put on a great showing at the meet and moved to the top of the conference rankings. Gore set the tone when he placed 12th in the men’s 800m run with a 1:57.44. The time currently stands as the best in the conference.  Sanders added a 21st place finish with a 1:59.11. The time is only second to Gore in the CIAA. Junior Chandar Anderson posted the top time in the conference in the men’s 400m dash when he ran a 48.97 to place second in the event.

The two teams will return to action on February 3rd and 4th when the teams take part in the South Carolina Invitational.
