ORANGEBURG, SC (January 11, 2024) – The Claflin Lady Panthers (6-7) had to dig down and fend off a scrappy Benedict Lady Tigers (2-11) to take a 73-61 win, Thursday evening. Though the Lady Panthers got off to a hot start in the game, the Lady Panthers used a balanced attack to hold off a Benedict team that would never give up.
As a team, the Lady Panthers added a strong defensive effort to go along with their balanced offense to claim the win. The Lady Panthers forced 35 Benedict turnovers in the win. The Lady Panthers finished the game shooting 41.9% (26-of-62) in the game. Claflin senior guard Lauren Scott led the way for the Lady Panthers with 22 points, three steals, and a block in the game. Claflin junior guard Jasmyn Jeffries added 11 points with five assists and three rebounds while redshirt-sophomore forward Leigha Harris had 10 points with four rebounds as well.
THe Lady Panthers took control of the game early with a scorching hot first half. The team opened the game with a 17-2 run. By the second quarter, the team built a 37-15 lead after a three-point play from sophomore Ashari Lewis. The lead was the largest of the game for the Lady Panthers. In the second half, the Lady Panthers found themselves holding off the Benedict attack as their lead was cut to do a few as seven points, 63-56 with just over three minutes left to play. However, the Lady Panthers were able to hold on late to pull out the 73-61 win.
With the win, the Lady Panthers improve to 6-7 overall. The team will return to action, Saturday, when they take on the Morris Yellowjackets at the MLK HBCU Unity Invitational.
