ELIZABETH CITY, NC (March 26, 2023) – The Claflin Lady Panthers (17-9, 5-1 CIAA) completed the 2023 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Round Up in style when the team took an 11-10 win over the host Elizabeth City State Vikings (3-11, 3-3 CIAA), Sunday afternoon. The Lady Panthers took an 11-5 lead over the Vikings into the seventh inning before allowing five ECSU runs. However, the Lady Panthers would get the outs they needed and sealed the win.
The Lady Panthers had a great day at the plate to take the win. The team totaled 15 hits with freshman catcher Zecariya Fenwick leading the way. She went three-for-four at the plate with two runs scored and five runs batted in (RBI). Fellow freshman short stop Cydney Cooper added a two-for-three batting performance with two runs scored and four RBI.
Claflin sophomore pitcher Breyanna Collins (6-4) took the pitching win. She started the game and three 6.2 innings. She finished the game with just six earned runs allowed and no walks. Senior Jaelyn Jackson came in to secure her first save of the season.
With the win, the Lady Panthers improve to 17-9 overall and 5-1 in CIAA play. The team will return to action, Saturday, when they open CIAA Southern Division play against the Saint Augustine’s Lady Falcons.
