Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ORANGEBURG, SC– The South Carolina State women’s softball team wrapped up the 2023 season at home in a 1-1 split with Coppin State over the weekend at the Lady Bulldog Softball Field.
South Carolina State had its best season under four-year coach Tatijana Matthews finishing the season with a 7-28 overall record, and 5-11 in the MEAC.
GAME 1: Coppin State rallied for three runs late in the sixth inning to take the lead over the Lady Bulldogs and to secure 5-4 win. Vanessa Carrizosa pitched all seven innings for Coppin State allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out four. Destiny Calloway the starting pitcher, allowed five runs on five hits and striking out one. Zarria Smith came in as relief pitcher to close out the game. Kaylah Leslie led the Lady Bulldogs with three hits in three at-bats.
GAME 2: Coppin State jumped out with an early lead over the Lady Bulldogs scoring four runs in the first inning. Going into the bottom of the fourth inning the Eagles had a 7-1 advantage over the Lady Bulldogs. SCSU rallied back to score six runs to end the fourth inning tied 7-7. Smith came earned the win, allowing zero hits and zero runs while striking out three.
The starting pitcher DeAsia Lowther allowed three hits and seven runs over four innings while striking out three. Lowther led the Lady Bulldogs in hits going 2-for-4 at the plate.
