ORANGEBURG, SC (December 9, 2023) – The Claflin Lady Panthers (2-4, 0-2 CIAA) controlled much of the game, but a costly fourth-quarter drought proved to be too much for the team to overcome in a 62-58 loss to the Bowie State Bulldogs (6-2, 1-0 CIAA). The Lady Panthers carried a 12-point lead into the fourth quarter, but the team could not keep up with the Bulldogs and allowed the win to slip away from their grasp.
The loss came despite some strong overall play by the Lady Panthers. As a team, the squad shot a solid 39.3% (22-of-56) from the floor. Claflin junior guard Lauren Scott led a balanced effort for the Lady Panthers with a game-high 16 points with eight rebounds in the game. Senior guard Nya Morris added 12 points with six rebounds while junior guard Jasmyn Jeffries added 12 points with seven rebounds and seven assists. Senior forward Destiny Coleman added 11 points with seven rebounds.
Though the team lost, the Lady Panthers played some of their best basketball of the short season. The team got started with a hot start, jumping out to a 9-0 lead early in the first quarter and taking a 31-31 tie into the locker room at halftime. The team had another great showing in the third quarter when they built a 51-39 lead after a Scott three-pointer in the final seconds of the period. Unfortunately, the Lady Panthers allowed Bowie State to outscore them 23-7 and finished the day with a 62-58 loss.
With the loss, the Lady Panthers fell to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The team will return to action on Monday, when they host the Lincoln (Pa.) Lady Lions in a 5:30 p.m. game.
