CHARLOTTE, NC (January 16, 2024) – The honors came rolling in for the Claflin University Panthers basketball team. Claflin senior guard Bryson Dennis was named the Food Lion Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week while junior forward Zion Obanla was named the Food Lion CIAA Men’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week. The honors came after the Panthers had a pair of great individual performances for the duo.
Dennis’ honor came after two solid games at home and was highlighted by a breakout game on the road. It was at Virginia State where Dennis really stole the show. He broke out for a career-high 32 points, including a game-tying three-pointer in the final seconds of regulation that helped power the Panthers to an 82-75 overtime win at Virginia State. He also had nine points with three assists in a 71-53 win over Virginia Union and seven points with an assist against Benedict.
While Dennis has been providing the offensive punch for the Panthers, Obanla’s defensive efforts have been equally impressive and deserving of honors as well. He opened the week with a near double-double in a 71-53 win over Virginia Union and he added a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds against Benedict. At Virginia State, he also added a blocked shot at Virginia State. For the week, Obanla totaled four blocks with three against Benedict.
The Panthers will be back in action, tomorrow when the team hosts the Livingstone College Blue Bears at 7:30 p.m. For more information on Panthers basketball, contact the Claflin University Office of Athletics Media Relations at (803) 535-5548 or log on to www.athletics.claflin.edu.
