SC State Men, Women Learn NCAA Tennis Destinations

The South Carolina State men’s and women’s tennis teams, fresh off their respective Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) tournament championships over the weekend, learned their respective destinations and opponents for the 2023 NCAA Tennis Championships, which unveiled their brackets Monday evening.        The Bulldog men won’t have far to go, heading to Columbia, S.C., to take on in-state rival and No. 9 overall seed South Carolina, while the Bulldog women will be in Raleigh, N.C. — not far from Cary, N.C., site of the MEAC Tennis Championships — to face No. 3 seed N.C. State.Match dates and times have yet to be announced.Both S.C. State programs won their third straight MEAC crowns this past weekend; the women defeated Delaware State 4-0 in the final, and the men beat North Carolina Central by the same score. MEAC Player of the Year Sofiya Chursina was the women’s Outstanding Performer, while Pedro Sasso earned that honor on the men’s side and MEAC Coach of the Year Hardeep Judge was both tournaments’ Outstanding Coach.The Gamecocks (19-6) saw three players earn All-SEC honors — First Team honorees Toby Smauel and Connor Thomson and Second Teamer James Story — and fell in the quarterfinals of their conference tournament to Texas A&M. The Wolfpack (23-4) earned their first-ever ACC tournament crown on April 23 with a 4-1 win over top-ranked and previously undefeated North Carolina.
