CHARLOTTE  (September 3, 2023) – South Carolina State dropped a tough 24-3 decision on the road versus host Charlotte 49ers at Jerry Richardson Stadium Saturday (Sept. 2nd).

The Bulldogs fall to 0-2 on the season, while the 49ers improve to 1-0.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Andre Washington started in replacement for injured Corey Fields, Jr., finished 6-of-17 passing for 59-yards and an interception. True freshman running backs Kacy Fields (9 carries for 43-yards) and Jawarn Howell (13 carries for 33-yards) posted a solid day on the ground.

Jordan Smith finished with two (2) catches for 27-yards, while junior kicker Gavyn Zimmerman posted the only score of the game for South Carolina State on a 42-yards field goal in the second quarter at the 13:53 mark.

Defensive back Jamre Benjamin spearheaded the defensive with nine (9) tackles and an interception, while junior linebacker added eight (8) tackles, two (2) tackles for loss and one (1) sack on the day.

Jeblonski Green, Jr. led the charge on the defensive front with six (6) tackles, three (3) tackles for loss for 10-yards along with a sack in the loss.

Next up the Bulldogs remain on the road versus ACC foe Georgia Tech in an 1 p.m. non-conference battle in Atlanta, Ga.
